Since ancient times various mountains around the world have been held sacred. These mountains have acquired a special stature as natural objects of religious devotion.

All these have their own sanctity associated legend that enveloped him.


Here are 10 sacred mountain in the world:

1. Mount Olympus, Greece



This is the highest mountain of Greece. It is said to be home to 12 Gods in power at the time of Ancient Greece. The peak was named Mytikas, believed to be the throne of Zeus.

2. Mount Fuji, Japan



This mountain is sacred by the Shinto religion. They consider this mountain is the home of Goddess of sengen-Sama. Temples dedicated to Goddess is located at the top of the mountain.

3. Mount Everest, Nepal



This highest mountain on the planet is called as the Goddess Mother of the Universe, the Nepalese call it Goddess of the Sky.It stans at  8,848 meters or 29,029 ft.

4. Macchu Picchu, Peru



Macchu Picchu is considered sacred because of  the legacy of the Inca civilization and Incas here are also believed in the power of nature. Remains of the observatory show that the Incas are contemplating passing star cluster. Mountains towering in the background is Huayna Picchu Macchu Picchu, one side supporting the Temple of the Moon.

5. Mount Agung, Bali



The mountain is sacred by Hindus in Indonesia. The Mother Temple of Besakih, the largest and holiest temple in Bali is located here. It stands at the height of 3142 meters above sea level.

6. Mount Nebo, Jordan



Mount Nebo is where the Hebrew prophet Moses beheld the promised land that God would give to the Jewish people. Christians believe that the mountain is also home to the death of the Prophet.

7. Mount of the Holy Cross, Colorado



It is a popular Christian pilgrimage site.It is named for the distinctive cross-shaped snowfield that adorns its northeastern face.

8. Mount Sinai, Egypt



It is called sacred by Muslims and Christians.There is an Orthodox Christian church and a mosque for Muslims at the peak of this mountain.

9. Mount Kailash, China/Tibet



The mountain is located close to the river-the longest river in Asia namely Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and the Karnali. It is the only sacred mountain by five religions: Ayyavazhi, Bon, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jainism.

10. Popocatepel, Mexico



This peak is located  around 45 miles southeast of Mexico City. Spanish missionaries built 14 monasteries here during the 16th century,which been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
