THE CHENGDU GREENLAND Tower, currently under construction, is rising to conquer the Chengdu skyline. The expected completion date of the tower, which began construction last November, is sometime in 2018, the ten-year anniversary of a devastating earthquake that killed almost 70,000 people and ravaged the southwestern Chinese city’s infrastructure. At 1,535 feet tall, the skyscraper will be the fourth tallest building in China—and a giant exhibit of engineering’s ability to make tall things stand up.

The Chengdu Tower, in particular, stands up because of a new twist on an old technique that marries design and engineering. In addition to the concrete core and steel frames that make up the interior skeleton of many modern skyscrapers, the Chengdu Tower has an exoskeleton—a weight-bearing structure constructed on the outside of the building.

Techniques like the exoskeleton offer a creative solution to skyscraper engineers’ ongoing challenge: how to reduce building costs while staying true to an architect’s vision. To save money, engineers are always trying to use as little material as possible while keeping the building safe. It’s helped that over the years scientists have developed better materials like stronger steel and concrete. But designing the exoskeleton is a problem that architects and engineers tackle together—how to make a structure that is both cost-efficient and beautiful.

“The ideal goal is for the exterior structure to reflect the shape of the building, almost like they’re bound together,” says Fei Xu, an architect who worked on the Chengdu Tower.

supertalls-7

The basic engineering principle is simple. Exoskeletons are typically made up of triangles, which are the most structurally stable two dimensional shape. “You basically put a big ‘X’ on the building,” says Dennis Poon, a structural engineer who led the engineering design behind the tower. “It’s an efficient structural system because you use the entire width of the building to resist wind.”

But in execution, the Chengdu Tower’s exoskeleton is much more intricate than just some big X’s. Because Chengdu is typically cloudy, the architects wanted the tower to face many different directions to reflect more natural light. Unlike older exoskeletons that lie flat on the facade of the building, such as the large triangles that support the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, finished in 1990, each adjacent triangle in the Chengdu tower’s exoskeleton is on a different plane. The triangles weave in and out along the building’s many faces, which make the tower look as though it is twisting in the air.

In addition to supporting the weight of the building, the 3-D exoskeleton also makes the building look better on the interior compared to a flat 2-D exoskeleton. “It makes the building more transparent by allowing you a bigger view on the inside,” Xu says.

To be clear, an exoskeleton isn’t necessarily better than other weight-bearing techniques—it’s just another way to make skyscrapers stand up, while also simultaneously being material-efficient and cool-looking. “Sometimes we use exoskeletons, and sometimes we don’t,” says Poon. “It depends on what drives the architectural design.”

With all these technical innovations, the structural principles that these engineers use are still basically the same as the ones used on the very first skyscrapers. To do their job, structural engineers like Poon track where all the forces go—how the concrete slab of the top floor transfers weight into steel beams that support it, how those beams shift that weight into larger beams, and how eventually all the weight gets transferred to the foundation of the entire building.

These days, computers make the planning process a lot faster. Engineers can build computer models to investigate the structural integrity of more creative geometry, which makes designs like the Chengdu Tower possible. By comparison, the Empire State Building, which is about 100 feet shorter than the Chengdu Tower, was designed “using a slide rule,” says John Shmerykowsky, a structural engineer has worked on many high-rises in New York City for over 50 years. “All the calculations were done by hand.”

So what keeps engineers from building even taller buildings? It’s not physics. “We can build twice as high as we can today,” says Shmerykowsky. “But it all comes back to the economics.” In other words, taller buildings aren’t worth the money to developers right now.

Plus, most cities have municipal codes that place restrictions on tall buildings to prevent them from interfering with air traffic or from disrupting the overall aesthetic of the city’s skyline. On the engineers’ part, as long as the soil around the foundation of the building can take the weight, even taller skyscrapers are possible.

“I look forward to designing a mile-high building,” Poon says. A nice pipe dream for now.

9/11: The day Osama shook the world
New Delhi: On September 11, 2001, a series of coordinated suicide attacks were carried out by Al Qaeda upon the United States.  On that morning, 19 al-Qaeda  terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger  jet airliners.
9/11: The day Osama shook the worldThe hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both towers collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others.
The hijackers crashed a third airliner into  The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington DC.
The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville  in rural Pennsylvania after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. to target either the Capitol Building or the White House  There were no survivors from any of the flights.

Nearly 3,000 victims and the 19 hijackers died in the attacks.
According to the New York State Health Department, 836 responders, including firefighters and police personnel, have died as of June 2009. Among the 2,752 victims who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority.
Another 184 people were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries.
The United States President George W. Bush responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists, and enacting the  USA Patriot Act.
Many other countries also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Some American stock exchanges stayed closed for the rest of the week following the attack, and posted enormous losses upon reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The destruction of billions of dollars' worth of office space caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan.
The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and the Pentagon Memorial  was built adjacent to the building.
The rebuilding process has started on the Worlkd Trade Center site. In 2006, a new office tower was completed on the site of  7  World Trade Center.. The new  One World Trade Center  is currently under construction at the site and is expected to be completed in 2013.
Three more towers were originally expected to be built between 2007 and 2012 on the site. Ground was broken for the Flight 93 National Memorial on November 8, 2009, and the first phase of construction is expected to be ready for the 10th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2011

The Attack:

Early on the morning of September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers  took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark and Washington DC.

At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175,  which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.

Another group of hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into  the Pentagon  9:37 a.m.

A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania,  at 10:03 a.m, after the passengers on board engaged in a fight with the hijackers. Its ultimate target was thought to be either the Capitol or the White House.

Some passengers were able to make phone calls using the cabin airphone service and mobile phones,  and provide details, including that several hijackers  were aboard each plane, that mace or other form of noxious chemical spray, such as tear gas or pepper spray  was used, and that some people aboard had been stabbed Reports indicated that during two of the flights, the hijackers stabbed and killed aircraft pilots, flight attendants and in at least one case, a passenger.

The 9/11 Commission established that two of the hijackers had recently purchased Leatherman multi-function hand tools.

A flight attendant on Flight 11, a passenger on Flight 175, and passengers on Flight 93 mentioned that the hijackers had bombs, but one of the passengers also mentioned he thought the bombs were fake. No traces of explosives were found at the crash sites, and the 9/11 Commission believed the bombs were probably fake.

On United Airlines Flight 93, a transcript of audio recorded by the cockpit voice recorder  revealed that crew and passengers attempted to seize control of the plane from the hijackers after learning through phone calls that similarly hijacked planes had been crashed into buildings that morning.

One of the hijackers gave the order to roll  the plane once it became evident that they would lose control of the plane to the passengers. Soon afterward, the aircraft crashed into a field near Shanksville.

In a September 2002 interview conducted by documentary-maker Yosri Fouda,  an  al Jazeera journalist, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Ramzi bin al-Shibh, who are believed to have organised the attacks, stated that the fourth hijacked plane was heading for the United States Capitol, which they gave the codename "the Faculty of Law"  not for the White House.

They further stated that al-Qaeda initially planned to fly hijacked jets into nuclear installations rather than the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but it was decided not to attack nuclear power plants "for the moment" because of fears it could "get out of control".

Three buildings in the World Trade Center Complex collapsed due to structural failure  on the day of the attack.

The south tower (2 WTC) fell at approximately 9:59 a.m., after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175.

The north tower (1 WTC) collapsed at 10:28 a.m., after burning for approximately 102 minutes.
When the north tower collapsed, debris that fell on the nearby 7 World Trade Center (7 WTC) building damaged it and initiated fires. These fires burned for hours and compromised the building's structural integrity, which led to the crumbling of the east penthouse at 5:20 p.m.
and to the complete collapse of the building at 5:21 p.m.

Casualties

There were a total of 2,996 deaths, including the 19 hijackers and 2,977 victims.

The victims were distributed as follows: 246 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in New York City in the towers and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon. All the deaths in the attacks were civilians except for 55 military personnel killed in the attack on the Pentagon.

More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

In 2007, the New York City medical examiner's office added Felicia Dunn-Jones to the official death toll from the September 11 attacks. Dunn-Jones died five months after 9/11 from a lung condition which was linked to exposure to dust during the collapse of the World Trade Center.

Leon Heyward, who died of lymphoma in 2008, was added to the official death toll in 2009.

Along with the 110-floor Twin Towers of the World Trade Center itself, numerous other buildings at the World Trade Center site were destroyed or badly damaged, including 7 World Trade Center, 6 World Trade Center, 5 World Trade Center, 4 World Trade Center,  the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC) and the World Financial Center complex and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

Of the buildings and structures belonging to the World Trade Center complex, North Tower (1 World Trade Center), South Tower (2 World Trade Center), the Marriott Hotel (3 World Trade Center) and 7 World Trade Center were completely destroyed, 4 World Trade Center, 5 World Trade Center, One Liberty Plaza, the U.S. Customs House (6 World Trade Center), and both pedestrian bridges were severely damaged. The Deutsche Bank building on 130 Liberty Street was partially damaged and demolished later.

Bihar Election 2015: Pollsters Getting Vote Share Forecasts Right, but Seat Projections May Go Wrong

Bihar Election: Pollsters may get vote share forecasts right, but here's why seat projections will be wrong

By Nikhilesh Rao

In the past several elections, opinion pollsters have gotten pretty good at getting the vote share projections right. For example, in the 2014 May General Election in Uttar Pradesh, Hansa-NDTV and Lokniti-IBN had a only a 3.3 percent variance from the final vote share. However, by the time, they converted the vote share projections to seat share, Hansa underestimated BJP performance by 17 seats and Lokniti gave 24 less seats to the BJP than the final tally.

However, every pollster after the election always laments: “Look, we got our vote share estimates right. Don’t blame us if the seat projections come out wrong”.

And that is going to be the same story after the Bihar elections.

The below table and data from Ogmer shows a comparison of vote share & seat projections by various opinion polls:

Opinion-poll
Opinion-poll

In every single poll, there is not more than a two to three percent difference between the NDA combine and the JDU-RJD-INC alliance. But, if you look at the seat difference, it is all over the map.

For example, in the Swarajya/543 poll, a three percent vote share difference between BJP and the JDU-RJD-INC alliance has a difference of only five seats.

While a two percent difference in the India Today-Cicero poll has a 19 seat difference. Similarly, c-Voter’s Sep Eighth Poll has a three percent margin in favor of JDU-RJD-INC alliance which gives them a 22 seat advantage.

These differences are because each polling firm has their own secret sauce in converting vote share to seat projections. They could use the cube rule (where the seat shares have a multiplying factor with every 1 percent change in vote share), or the swing method (by comparing swings from previous elections) or any number of hybrid black magic methods.

It is well understood that minor changes in vote share could lead to disproportionate impact on seat shares. This was the case in the UP general elections of 2014, where 3.3 percent vote share led to differences of 17 to 24 seats. Similarly, in the Bihar elections, a one percent vote share variance between projections and actuals will lead to a multiplier effect when the votes are converted to seats.

Therefore, in close elections like in Bihar, the risk to pollsters will be extremely high because not only do they have to get the vote share exactly right but their vote share to seat projections should have no margin of error to not risk looking like being completely wrong on the final seat projections.

The odds of all of these lining up perfectly are extremely small. Therefore, the Bihar elections will be close from a vote share perspective but will not seem that when the seats are finally counted and pollsters will be left defending their models once again.

Thailand Vegetarian Festival - Devotees Undergo Gruesome Piercing Rituals As Sign Of Worship

It's an occasion that combines abstinence with extreme body modification. At Thailand’s Vegetarian Festival, which takes place over ten days on the popular tourist island of Phuket, devotees aim to purify their minds and bodies by avoiding meat, alcohol and sex. More bizarrely, they also endure ritual mutilation, piercing both cheeks and threading objects through as a sign of reverence to their gods and ancestors. Most festival goers use skewers for this excruciating ceremony, but many take it one step further. Participants this year were observed thrusting umbrellas, spades and even tricycles through their faces.

List of Top 10 Worst Cities in the U.S. During Christmas

unhappy senior man in red santa ...As the voice on the radio reminds us, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Joy to the world. Feliz Navidad. 'Tis the season to be jolly, and all that jazz.

But not if you are visiting one of these 10 ho-ho-horrendous Christmas-time cities that make Whoville look like Santa's Village by comparison, even while the Grinch is on the prowl:

Philadelphia

Save the "brotherly love" shtick. When you pelt Santa Claus with snowballs and boo him off the field, you earn a permanent reputation as a place to avoid at all costs on Christmas.

South Windsor, CT

We're going to take a stab in the dark and say the holiday vibe in the unofficial Satanist capital of America — there's even a street here called Beelzebub Road — is less than merry (in parts, anyway).

Feel free to serenade South Windsor with Christmas carols, but don't be surprised to hear chants of "Hail Satan!" intermingling with the chorus of "Silent Night."

Miami, FL

364 days a year, we'll take perpetual sunshine in paradise. But we're dreaming of a white Christmas, not a Christmas with highs in the mid-70s.

International Falls, MN

Forgive our heresy, Miami. After spending an hour in International Falls, we want you back with all our frostbitten hearts.

Situated on the Canadian border and known as "The Nation's Icebox," International Falls is a place that only a puffin could love. Even the magic of the holidays doesn't make the blistering winds and icicles hanging from your nose any easier to bear.

New York (The Bronx)

When they say that Christmas in New York is magical, they mean Manhattan. In the Bronx, the vagrants have "declared war on Christmas," urinating in the streets and panhandling so aggressively that the borough has been forced to cancel its annual tree lighting ceremony in Ciccarone Park. If you have a choice, steer clear of "The Boogie Down" in 2015.

Ferdinand, IN

Attractions in "America's Christmas Hometown," Santa Claus, Indiana, include: the Santa Claus Museum and Village; Frosty's Fun Center; the country's largest campground Christmas lights display; Santa's Candy Castle; an epic 3-week holiday gala; and the Santa Claus Post Office, where volunteers respond to the thousands of "Dear Santa" letters they receive from children worldwide.

Attractions in Ferdinand, IN, just 8 miles north, include: none of those things. Talk about a reindeer-sized case of neighbor envy.

Washington, D.C.

How is Santa supposed to navigate his sleigh over a district-wide no-fly zone? Oh, well. Most of D.C. would probably be getting coal anyway.

Anywhere in The Bahamas

Christmas in paradise may sound glorious in theory, but if you choose the Bahamas, you'll be celebrating alone. Despite being predominantly Christian, Bahamians don't recognize Christmas, celebrating the colorful but mistletoe-deprived festival of Junkanoo instead.

Cleveland, OH

Baltimore Ravens v Cleveland Browns

Each year, Clevelanders of all ages dream of opening that elusive Cavaliers championship season DVD or Browns Super Bowl sweater under the Christmas tree ... and end up settling for scarves and Legos instead. What a yuletide bring-down.

Santa's Secret Village (The North Pole)

For 364 days a year, you bust your elfish behind to make trinkets and gadgets. Then, on the one night you have a chance to kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labor, that jolly fat boss of yours scoops them up from under you and sails across the sky, laughing cruelly all the way.

Marcus Whelchel lives, works, and writes in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife and daughter. He is currently writing the Okay American Novel and thinking idly about lonely shoes on the side of the road.

World 10 Biggest and Largest Waterfalls

Wondering which is the world's largest waterfall.

Anyone who’s seen a waterfall up close will agree that their majesty is almost indescribable. If even a small fall can inspire these feelings, imagine what it’s like to look at the world’s largest waterfall.

These are the 10 biggest falls on the planet, based on their width, rather than height or volume. Each one is wonderful in its own way.

10. Inga Falls

Inga Falls
Inga Falls (Richard and Jo deMeester/Flickr)

Inga Falls, a 3,000-foot wide waterfall, is located on the Congo River, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It’s a series of falls and rapids, which drops around 315 feet, but very gradually over a run of roughly 9 miles. However, the main, and most impressive, part of the falls drops around 70 feet in one go. There are hundreds of channels in these falls, separated out by a multitude of large rocks and small islands.

9. Niagara Falls

Nigara Waterfall
Nigara Waterfall (Rodnet Campbell/Flickr)

Despite being relatively low on the list of the world’s largest falls, Niagara Falls is undoubtedly the best known waterfall on the planet. It receives somewhere between 14 and 20 million visitors annually and has been the location for many foolhardy and daring feats, such as that performed by Annie Edson Taylor, who was the first person to survive a trip over the Niagara Falls in a barrel.

At 3,950 feet wide, it’s far from the largest waterfall around, but it is the falls with the largest volume of water traveling through it. It has three separate parts: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe, or Canadian, Falls.

8. Chutes Wagenia

Chutes Wagenia
Chutes Wagenia (wodofer/BlogSpot)

Chutes Wagenia is more commonly known as Kisangani Falls or Stanley Falls, the former of which is accurate, but less often used, and the latter of which stems from British colonial times, and is inaccurate but has been proliferated. It stretches 4,500 feet, across the whole of the width of the Lualaba River, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite its width, it’s not an extremely visually impressive waterfall, only dropping 30 feet in total, with the highest single fall dropping just 15 feet.

7. Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls (Mick Byrne/Flickr)

Victoria Falls is a 5,600-foot wide waterfall located on Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. The river falls roughly 344 feet into a gorge made up of lateral volcanic dikes, which were formed as the river eroded the rock and soil of its bed.

As the water falls into the gorge, mist and spray rises up, more than 100 feet higher than the top of the falls, giving the appearance that smoke is rising out of a deep hole in the earth. This is where it gets its traditional name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to “the smoke that thunders." The river is divided into four segments by two islands, resulting in four distinct falls, each of which has its own name: Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract.

6. Vermilion Falls

Vermilion Falls

Although Vermilion Falls does not drop from an impressive height, falling only 15 to 20 feet, it is the sixth biggest waterfall in the world, in terms of width, as it spans 6,000 feet across. It’s located along Peace River, in Northern Alberta, Canada, which is an otherwise still and, as the name suggests, peaceful river. It’s likely that the rural nature of its location has stopped it from becoming too well known or much of a tourist attraction. However, if you can make it out there, it’s an impressive sight to behold.

5. Saltos del Mocono

Saltos del Mocona

Saltos del Mocono is part of the River Uruguay in Argentina. It’s amongst the most unique of all large-river waterfalls, as it drops down a 6,000-foot trough that has been carved lengthways into a basaltic formation. This makes it almost a full 180 degree semi-circle of waterfall. This 6,775-foot wide waterfall drops down roughly 35 feet. Although the majority of the waterfall is in Argentina, some actually lies in Brazil, which is where most of the best viewpoint for the falls are.

4. Cataratas del Iguazo

Cataratas del Iguazo (Ike Gomez Flickr)
Cataratas del Iguazo (Ike Gomez Flickr)

South America’s Cataratas del Iguazo is also known as Iguazo Falls. Part of the Rio Iguazo, the falls straddle the border between Argentina and Brazil. This 8,800-foot wide waterfall drops rough 269 feet. Most of the river fall down into an area known as Garganta del Diablo, or The Devil’s Throat, but the rest spreads out over a wide, flat shelf, splitting into hundreds of individual falls. This waterfall can vary greatly in volume, depending on how much rain has fallen. At times it shrinks down to a fraction of its usual size, but at other times it will spread to up to 9,500 feet wide.

3. Chutes Kongou

Chutes Kongou
Chutes Kongou (Cmpott/Flickr)

Also known as Kongou Falls, Chutes Kongou measures 10,500 feet wide, making it the world’s third largest existing waterfall. It’s part of the Ivindo River in Gabon, and is roughly 185 feet tall. Amongst the most powerful waterfalls in the world, roughly 31,800 cubic feet of water flow down it each second. These falls are truly a sight to behold, nestled amongst dense, equatorial rainforests. Kongou Falls is located within the Ivindo National Park, which was set up to protect the biodiversity of the Ivindo River.

2. Salto Para

Salto Para

Salto Para, or Para Falls, is an 18,400-foot wide waterfall on the Rio Caura in the Bolivar region of Venezuela. These half-moon shaped falls are formed where two parts of the river come together and drop down almost 200 feet, each side of a lush, green jungle island.

1. Chutes de Khone

Chutes de Khone

Chutes de Khone – also known at Khone Falls – is the largest waterfall in the world. At 35,376 feet wide, it’s almost twice the width of it next largest competitor. The falls are part of the Mekong river in Laos, and occur where the river splits into seven large channels and many more smaller ones. It’s made up of several different rapids and falls, cascading down 69 feet. The most defined part of the waterfall is a 45-foot drop, at a 60 degree angle.

Thanksgiving Day: What's the history of the holiday and why does the US celebrate with turkey?

When is Thanksgiving Day 2016?

Thursday November 24th, (the fourth Thursday in November).

Thanksgiving Day traditionally kicks off the 'holiday season' in the United States. The day was set in stone by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and approved by Congress in 1941. FDR changed it from Abraham Lincoln's designation as the last Thursday in November (because there are sometimes five Thursdays in the month).

While Britons think of it as a warm-up for the Yuletide period, many Americans think it of it as just as important as Christmas.

What is the history of Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day can be traced back to the 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the religious refugees from England known popularly as the Pilgrims invited the local Native Americans to a harvest feast after a particularly successful growing season.

The previous year's harvests had failed and in the winter of 1620 half of the pilgrims had starved to death.

Luckily for the rest, members of the local Wampanoag tribe taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, beans and squash (the Three Sisters); catch fish, and collect seafood.

There are only two contemporary accounts of the 1621 Thanksgiving, but it's clear that Turkey was not on the menu. The three-day feast included goose, lobster, cod and deer.

So why do Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day?

Pilgrim Edward Winslow wrote a letter about that now-famous meal in 1621 which mentioned a turkey hunt before the dinner.

Another theory says the choice of turkey was inspired by Queen Elizabeth I who was eating dinner when she heard that Spanish ships had sunk on their way to attack England.

Queenie was so thrilled with the news she ordered another goose be served. Some claim early US settlers roasted turkeys as they were inspired by her actions.

Others say that as wild turkeys are native to North America, they were a natural choice for early settlers.

Classic Thanksgiving dishes

Turkey: and/or ham, goose and duck or turduken (a spatchcocked combo of three whole birds!)

Stuffing (also known as dressing): a mix of bread cubes, chopped celery, carrots, onions and sage stuffed inside the turkey for roasting. Chestnuts, chopped bacon or sausage, and raisins or apples are also sometimes included in the stuffing.

Pies: pumpkin pies are most common, but pecan, apple, sweet potato and mincemeat pies are also quite popular.

Who set the date of Thanksgiving Day?

'The National Thanksgiving Proclamation' was the first formal proclamation of Thanksgiving in America. The first President of the United States George Washington made this proclamation on October 3, 1789.

Then in 1846, author Sarah Josepha Hale waged a one-woman campaign for Thanksgiving to be recognised as a truly national holiday.

In the US the day had previously been celebrated only in New England and was largely unknown in the American South. All the other states scheduled their own Thanksgiving holidays at different times, some as early as October and others as late as January.

Hale's advocacy for the national holiday lasted 17 years and four presidencies before the letter she wrote to Lincoln was successful. In 1863 at the height of the Civil War he supported legislation which established a national holiday of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November.

Lincoln perhaps wanted the date to tie in with the anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod, which occurred on November 21, 1620. Although we now use the Gregorian calendar. In 1621 the date would have been November 11 to the Pilgrims who used the Julian calendar.

So Hale finally got her wish. She is perhaps now better known, though, for writing the nursery rhyme 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'.

'Franksgiving'

In 1939, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week to try and give a boost to retailers before Christmas during the Great Depression.

Several states followed FDR’s lead but 16 states refused move the holiday shift, leaving the country with rival Thanksgivings. FDR changed his mind after coming under pressure from Congress and in 1941, the a resolution was passeed returning the holiday to the fourth Thursday of November.

Atlantic City mayor Thomas D. Taggart later described the Thanksgiving holiday from 1939–1941 as "Franksgiving".

The Presidential reprieve

Eating turkey is actually more associated with Thanksgiving than it is Christmas in the States with over 50 million turkeys served up every year in the US.

Every year, though, the POTUS ‘pardons’ at least one turkey. This year, Jihad Douglas, chairman of the National Turkey Federation introduced a pair of turkeys at the Willard Inter Continental Hotel ahead of their 'pardon' by President Obama at the White House.

The names of the main turkey and his alternate were announced at the annual White House ceremony.

The public presentation of two prize turkeys to the commander-in-chief in the lead-up to Thanksgiving had been a time-honoured photo op since the 1940s.

But on Nov 17, 1989 - 200 years after George Washington's proclamation (see above) - President George H.W. Bush formalised the tradition when he pardoned a 50-pound turkey in the White House Rose Garden.

“Let me assure you," Bush said to the 30 schoolchildren present. "This fine turkey will not end up on anyone’s dinner table, not this guy. He’s granted a presidential pardon as of right now.”

Two years earlier Ronald Reagan told the assembled press he would have "pardoned" Charlie, the White House turkey at the ceremony that year when he was asked if he would have pardoned the key players in the Iran-Contra scandal.

The presidential turkey pardon has remained an annual Thanksgiving ritual ever since.
